Scanning Guidelines

Scanning Guidelines

This section outlines the steps that need to undertaken before submitting glass slides for scanning. Our scanning guidelines are also included on the slide scanning request form.

Slide condition

Slides must be clean, free from excess mountant and adequately labelled / annonymised prior to submitting for scanning. We do not accept slides with patient names or barcodes. Please take adequate steps to ensure that these cannot be seen. Please check that covered labels cannot be seen when held up to a light.

We may return unsuitable slides without scanning them.

Scanning costs

Our costs are per slide, and based on the magnification required, and are:


  • £13.50 per 20x slide
  • £25 per 40x slide

The cost advertised for scanning includes one guaranteed year on our digital slide servers. Extensions to this period are subject to the discretion of the server administrators.

Slide compatibility

Our website makes use of HTML5 scripting which requires modern web browser version, and JavaScript to be enabled. Restricted bandwidth and slow PCs can affect the virtual slide viewing experience.
