Normal Skin

Under the microscope, skin appears to have two main layers; the outer layer (epidermis) and the inner layer (dermis). Beneath the dermis lies fat and muscle.

The cells within the skin that gives it pigment as is responsible for skin darkening in the sun or getting a 'tan' are called melanocytes and are normally found in the area where the epidermis and dermis meet.
