Diseased Liver

If the liver is exposed to constant damage (e.g. from high levels of alcohol), the liver becomes cirrhotic (scarred).

The healthy liver cells are replaced with scar tissue and this gives a nodular (lumpy) appearance. Eventually, when enough of the liver cells get replaced with scar tissue the liver starts to fail.

Under the microscope, there are many nodules made up of liver cells which are trying to re-grow, surrounded by scar tissue.
