Diseased Brain

The brain and circulating fluid is normally free of any bacteria as it is sterile. If bacteria do manage to get through into the fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord then this can cause a condition called meningitis.

Under the microscope, the area where cerebrospinal fluid flows (the subarachnoid space) is filled with cells that we produce to try and combat infection (neutrophils and macrophages).
