JISC case 00829

  • Male, 63 years old
  • Clinical details:
The patient was admitted with a 3 month history of dyspnoea and weight loss and repeated haemoptyses for 7 weeks. Bronchoscopy revealed a tumour in trachea occluding lower 1/3 above carina. Chest x-ray showed a large extra-tracheal mass in upper mediastinum. Portion of the trachea and the large mass were removed but the patient died post operatively. Half of the circumference of the tracheal mucosa was replaced by a crescent of firm, grey tumour. See photographs in reprint. No metastases were seen at necropsy.
  • Diagnosis:
Poorly differentiated primary squamous carcinoma of trachea. One of the sections shows clearly the transition from normal respiratory epithelium to in-situ carcinoma to frank breakthrough and invasion. The extra-tracheal mass consisted of matted metastatic lymph nodes.
  • Review diagnosis:
    Poorly differentiated squamous carcinoma.
  • System:
    Respiratory Tract
  • Specimen:
    Excision
  • Date:
    1963
