  • Male, 5 years old
  • Clinical details:
    The child was Lebanese but brought up in bo, Sierra Leone. For 2 months he had been unwell with weight loss and swelling of lower jaw. He was pale, looked ill, with wasting of limbs and oedoma. He had bilateral swelling of mandibles and parotids. In mouth there was an ulcer, displacing teeth. Thyroid and liver were enlarged. Abdominal masses were palpable and ascites. X-ray showed At necropsy there was involvement by soft, white tumour of multiple organs (see reprints) and there was a neoplastic ulcer in the stomach.destruction of the mandible by tumour. Shortly after admission he developed haematemesis, heart failure and died.
  • Diagnosis:
    Sections of kidney and jaw show the typical appearance of Burkitt lymphoma - clear histiocytes producing the "starry sky" effect.
