JISC case 00535

  • Female, 36 years old
  • Clinical details:
Eight months ago the patient complained of a lump in the left breast, present for a few weeks. The mass was apparently completely removed and the scar healed well. Over the last 6 weeks there was recurrence of the mass, which was about 1.5 inches in diameter and it was removed. There was considerable haemorrhage during and after the operation and shortly after radical mastectomy was performed. Chest X-ray normal. Follow-up:-The patient died 3 years after operation of disseminated secondary deposits. In the breast there was a haemorrhagic tumour, 3 x 3 x 2 inches, extending to within 0.5 inch of underlying pectoral muscle. Cut surface was pink and fleshy in the centre with large peripheral vascular spaces (see coloured transparencies). Axillary lymph nodes were free of tumour.
  • Diagnosis:
The tumour shows extensive areas of well-differentiated cavernous angiomatous structure, together with more cellular areas of irregular, intracystic papillary growth, with numerous mitoses. Malignant haemangioma.
  • Review diagnosis:
    Haemangiosarcoma
  • System:
    Breast
  • Specimen:
    Excision
