  • Male, 12 years old
  • Clinical details:
    The boy first noticed a mass in the right side of his neck in December 1951. Penicillin gave no improvement and biopsy three months from the onset showed malignant tumour, probably liposarcoma. X-ray treatment gave little benefit; and he died with signs of pulmonary metastases in December 1952 - 12 months from the onset. Necropsy; Bulky extensive ill-defined tumour of right side of neck invading pharynx and middle ear. Multiple large and small metastases in lungs, small metastases in liver, and several in right cerebral hemisphere.
  • Diagnosis:
    Liposarcoma of variable differentiation, some areas with plentiful fat cells, others undifferentiated and epithelioid in appearance.
