Small intestine. History of scrotal melanoma. Small bowel resection for mass.

Macro: Received 8.5cm length of small bowel with an exophytic mass measuring 4.5 x 2 x 1.5cm; lying 3 cm from the closest surgical margin.

Specials: S100 protein and Melan A positive in tumour cells.

Small intestine. Crohn's - obstructive symptoms, small bowel resection.

Macro: 340mm of small bowel with a stoma at one end. The mucosa is inflamed, haemorrhagic and ulcerated, 15mm polyp on a stalk within the area of ulceration and inflammation. Section from the polyp.

Large intestine. ? ischaemic ? colitis. Sub-total colectomy.

Macro: A segment of large bowel measuring 382mm in length. 88mm from one resection margin, the mucosa shows confluent ulceration which extends to the opposite end resection margin. 78mm from the opposite end resection margin, the serosal surface shows a fibrinous exudate over an area measuring 48 x 42mm. The underlying wall is thinned in this area.

Macro: A piece of pale tan tissue 1.2x1.8cm to a depth of 1.1cm.

Oesophagus. Patient presented with dysphagia. OGD revealed ulcerated tumour at gastrooesophageal junction. Pre-operatively 3 cycles of ecx neoadjuvant chemotherapy given. Oesophagogastrectomy performed.

Macro: The specimen showed a 35 x30mm polypoid ulcerated tumour at GOJ.

Small intestine. Laparoscopic anterior resection for rectal carcinoma. Separate nodule noted on small bowel - looks benign. (Specimen submitted as "peritoneal nodule" is the slide submitted for EQA).

Macro: Two pieces of cream/ white coloured tissue, the larger 16 x 6 x 7 mm, the smaller 4 mm maximum. Larger piece serially sectioned, and all taken in one cassette.

Specials: CD117, DOG-1, SMA - all positive. CD34, CD68 negative.

Female 52 years

Large intestine. Large bowel obstruction secondary to splenic flexure stricture, treated with stenting. Imaging confirmed splenic flexure stenosis and a large cyst in the tail of the pancreas. Represented with acute bowel obstruction therefore subtotal colectomy.

Macro: An extended right hemicolectomy 860mm. Appendix 65mm. At the splenic flexure is an area of serosal tethering and stenosis with a stent in situ. At 160mm from the ileocaecal valve there is a palpable nodule on the serosal surface 7mm in diameter. Attached omental tissue contains numerous palpable nodules all approximately 7mm. Thickening on the mesenteric aspect of the transverse colon 50mm.

Specials: diffuse strong positive CK7, CK19 and CA125, patchy positive staining for CK20 and negative staining for CDX2.
