Normal Colon

Under the microscope, the colon is comprised of lots of glands (crypts) which are lined up next to each other like test tubes. These crypts are made of specialised cells which create mucous which is released into the colon to lubricate the walls and allow movement of the waste products.

When the glands start to grow out of control and ignore the rest of the body’s commands, colorectal cancer can develop.
